Dr. Laura’s Unethical and Irrational Behavior
Even though Dr. Laura’s ‘advice’ to her callers usually ranges between dumb and cruel, I still listen to her show when I’m driving at night. Part of the attraction is the people who call in. Are they truly incapable of solving such everyday type run-of-the-mill problems? Maybe they are looking for their 15 minutes of fame by talking on the radio.
Dr. Laura definitely plays to an elitist group. Conservative, stay-at-home-moms are the backbone of her audience. Women who are used to obeying and not thinking too much for themselves are the perfect target for a woman who promotes herself as knowing everything about morals and ethics. Men do call in with questions, and they are the men who expect women to submit. Dr. Laura almost always sides with a man in any dispute (unless his mother is involved)and she always advises the couple (as long as they’re married) to have sex after they get off the phone.
I have long thought that the e mails and letters she reads on her show all sound as if written by the same person. They all have the same ‘voice.’ There is a good chance I am right. Dr. Laura actually used a member of her staff on more than one occasion to pose as an audience member on her TV show. There is reason to believe she has employees call in on the radio also.
I’ll be the first to agree that people can change. Dr. Laura agrees with that on occasion. That makes me wonder why she vehemently denied posing for nude pictures for the married man with whom she was having an affair. It’s not a thing most people would want to have surface in their lives, but lying about it means she’s not only a home wrecker, she’s also a liar. Add hypocrite to that list too, as she made denigrating comments about a nude photo of Barbara Walters and of Ms. Walter’s past affairs with married men.
It’s not like she learned her lesson, never to err again. Dr. Laura then began an affair with another married man. A man who divorced his wife and broke up his family. She was his ’shack-up honey,’ a term she generously bestows on unmarried couples. He married Laura eight years into their affair, after she got preggers. This out-of-wedlock pregnancy was not an accident. Laura actually had her tubal ligation reversed. So much for demanding that single mothers give their children up for adoption. Oh, that’s right, she got married. Please explain why her son, Deryck uses her last name instead of his father’s which is Bishop.
Okay, so we all know (at least anyone who listens to the show) that Dr. Laura is kind of strange about sex. She will get down right raunchy about sex of wedlock using terms like “humping your daughter” while making her point. But say the ‘I do’s’ and the woman is to instantly turn into the EverReady Bunny, always available for sex, never tired, never sick, never overwhelmed with work or stress, and never pissed off because your husband’s acting like a jerk. Otherwise, he’ll go looking for ‘comfort’ in the arms of another woman and it will be the wife’s fault. Hmmm, that sounds like she’s rationalizing her affairs with married men…it was the wife’s fault.
According to Dr. Laura, there is almost no problem that cannot be solved with sex, and lots of it. At the same time, don’t have too many kids. If you get pregnant, it’s your fault for being careless. And if you do have too many, you need to put the new baby up for adoption. If your husband or boyfriend takes a powder, the baby should be given up also, as all children need a father’s guidance.
Moving forward to when her own son is older. Laura and Deryck were in a surf shop and Laura was looking at a skate boarding magazine. She called it ’stealth pornography.’ She condemned this shop owner on her radio show for selling porn to kids, and when he denied the charges, Dr Laura sued him for lying. The judge dismissed her suit as frivolous. The shop owner then sued her and won quite a bit of money.
A few years back, Dr. Laura used to start her show by saying, “I am the mother of an American soldier. Hoo Ahh!” Now she’s back to saying, “I am my kid’s mom.” I wondered why she changed that part of her introduction. Her son Deryck, who is in the military, got into trouble over a web site he and some of his friends had. It was racist and it included cartoons of torture, rape and child molesting. The military took the site down. Now the story is that terrorists put that site up and blamed it on Deryck and some others! Is Dr. Laura so important to national security that the terrorists are after her? Me thinks not. There is plenty more about Deryck Schlessinger, if you’re interested, just Google his name. This year, 2009, Dr. Laura was suspended for three months from her yacht club. It seems she broke the rules for racing when she made gross modifications to her boat. In other words, she was caught cheating. Dr. Laura quit the club in a snit. Not everyone is willing to change the rules to accommodate her or to cave in to her bullying.
As you know, some people do change, but others never do. They like who they are, and Dr. Laura surely thinks she’s something special. The sad thing is, there are children and others at the mercy of people who believe in this woman.
