Despite all the doom and gloom being broadcast day and night on conservative talk radio, things are looking up. These whores for the Republican party are constantly bemoaning how bad things are. I can see why loyal listeners are depressed. The talking heads are doing their double-dog best to make people believe things are much worse than they are and getting even worse.

Not true!

Each day I see more positive signs of things getting better. A great example is the number of out-of-state license plates in our town. Tourists! They buy flip flops and suntan lotion. They buy food at restaurants and grocery stores. They buy gas and occassionally, a tire. People are starting to get over their fear and literally sticking their toe in the water of life again (in this case it’s the Pacific Ocean).

A friend who takes phone orders for a national company has confirmed my opinion. Customers are ordering more expensive items and opting for additional smaller items for Mother’s Day at a greater rate than at Valentine’s. That does not mean they love their moms more than their sweeties, it means people are more optimistic and starting to spend again.

Preident Obama’s approval ratings remain high although varied. Polls will do that; they’re like the stock market, you have to look at the big picture. Speaking of the stock market, it is improving.

Rather than focusing on the unemployment rate, let’s remember how many people are still working. Ten per cent unemployment means 90 per cent employment!

I’m not telling anyone to spend foolishly. If you need something repaired, have it done. It will save money in the long run. If you must replace an item and can afford to, then replace it. Even if you buy used, it will still help stimulate your local economy. And that’s where we all need to focus: locally. Buy local, not on-line. You’ll be supporting friends and neighbors and the job you save may be your own.

Here’s to Spring and sunny days ahead! After all, Summer is just around the corner.
